APS Teammates,

Classified Employees Aurora Public Schools takes great pride in the work we do to provide our students an excellent education so they become world class citizens. This pride is on full display not only in the classroom, but behind the scenes as well.

From October 16-22, APS will join other school districts statewide to observe Classified School Employees Week. Over 1,600-plus classified staff members deserve tremendous credit for the work they do to keep APS flying high. Without them, the operation of buses, preparation of meals and overall upkeep of our working and learning environments would not be as outstanding as it is.

Please take a moment to thank your classified teammates. I know you appreciate them as much as I do.

Classified colleagues, thank you for your tireless efforts to ensure our students’ success.

Game 24 Tournament “Adds Up” to Fun for APS Students

Game 24 Tournament 2012At the APS Professional Learning & Conference Center, students from across APS recently competed in the annual Game 24 Tournament. Forty students in grade 6-8 from ten middle schools and K-8 schools participated in this year's tournament.

And for the second year, 71 students from 18 APS elementary schools participated in their own Game 24 Tournament!

In groups of four, students picked cards that included four numbers and calculated equations that equaled 24 using only addition, subtraction, multiplication or division. One group of students received the numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4 on their card. They then shouted out equations with those numbers that equaled 24: "4 x 3 = 12, 12 x 2 = 24, 24 / 1 = 24!"

In the middle school tournament, Murphy Creek's Spencer Jackson, Aurora Quest's Andrew Miles, and Columbia's students Hubert Price and Faven Woldetatyos took top honors after the challenge round. The four students received certificates and medals as middle school tournament winners.

In the elementary school tournament, Moses Jones and Bettania Delcupp of Murphy Creek, Sebastian Para of Clyde Miller and Timothy Fox of Laredo took top honors.

Congratulations to all the students who matched mathematical wits with each other in this year's Game 24 Tournament!

Aurora Public Schools recently honored several classified staff members for their exemplary service through the Noticing and Naming/Secret Shopper initiative.

The staff members were commended for being genuine, pleasant, helpful and supportive on a consistent basis with people who enter offices throughout the district. Here are highlights from the honorees:

APS - Always Providing Service

Division of Equity and Engagement: Ana Sias

Ana Sias, School Services Specialist

Ana Sias

  • Ana is so amazing as she welcomes parents, students, school staff and hearing officers for expulsion hearings.  Ana greets all the people with a smile and a genuine handshake as she welcomes them to the conference room. She supplies water and makes copies or provides necessary support so that each meeting goes well. Congratulations, Ana!

 Sable Elementary School: Barb Majalca

Barb Majalca, Clerk

Barb Majalca

  • As I walked into Sable, Mrs. Barb Majalca is the first person who greeted me with a great big smile. She was speaking to a parent in Spanish, and you could see the parents’ interaction with Barb was easy going and relaxed. She greeted me with the same positive and warm demeanor helping me feel welcomed and taking care of what I needed. At the same time she was helping a substitute teacher get settled into Sable with a substitute’s folder and a treat bag. Congratulations, Barb!

Vassar Elementary School: Debbie Smith

Debbie Smith, Secretary

Debbie Smith

  • As I was signing into the building, I saw Debbie entering the school with a parent she had picked up to attend a meeting. They were talking and determining where to meet after the meeting so that she could drive the parent home. She was explaining details about the meeting and helping her find her way to the meeting room. Debbie always goes the extra mile! Congratulations, Debbie!

 South Middle School: Gloria Rodriquez

Gloria Rodriguez

Gloria Rodriguez

  • Walking into South I was greeted by Gloria at the front office. Gloria is a kind, upbeat and energetic person who greets people with a smile and a kind ear.  I saw Gloria working with a student whereas sitting next to her. Gloria was asking the student what he needed to do and what he understood as he was completing an assignment. She explained to the student what was expected and how she would support him.  Gloria is such an important member of the South Middle School family. Congratulations, Gloria!

Hinkley High School: Isabel Medina

Isabel Medina

Isabel Medina

  • Upon entering the office I was greeted by Isabel with a warm smiling face. Isabel was talking with a Spanish speaking parent but still took the time to let me know she noticed I was there. Isabel will ask parents or visitors what they need and help them get a visitor pass in exchange for an ID or check for APS ID. I saw parents lined up to talk with her and noticed how comfortable they are and how many she knew by name. Isabel asks the student assistants to escort the parent to wherever they need to go. Congratulations, Isabel!

Transportation: Skylar Morales

Skylar Morales

Skylar Morales

  • While attending a meeting at Serenity Day Treatment I was awe struck as a watched a para on the bus interacting with the students. Skylar was friendly and positive with the driver, staff and students. You could see the individual attention he gave each student and the positive relation between them. He called each student by name and understood how to engage them in conversation and held high expectations for their behavior in a positive and supportive manner. The students were smiling and waving as they left the bus. Skylar is an asset to the APS transportation team. Congratulations, Skylar!

Century Elementary School: Roderick Cowherd

Roderick Cowherd

Roderick Cowherd

  • At Century I observed an amazing man working with children. I observed Rod talking with a student and made sure as people were around him that his primary focus was on the student. Rod was naming and noticing what the student had been doing and then addressed the students next steps in a positive and proactive manner. As they were finishing their conversation you could feel the connection the two of them had. Rod explained that he would be connecting with the student’s teacher to make sure they were all on the same page and that he would be connecting with the parent. The student was happy and went on his way. Congratulations, Roderick!

5th Gear Kick-Off 10

Fifth graders are learning about making healthy choices through the “5th Gear Kids” program. It’s the second year of the wellness program in Aurora Public Schools.

5th grade students and their families recently attended the kickoff celebration to sign up for the program. Denver Broncos mascot Miles,  Colorado Rapids mascot Edson the Eagle and Ronald McDonald also attended.

The goal of “5th Gear Kids” is to prevent obesity, improve academic performance and enhance lifelong health. It teaches 5th graders about energy balance and healthy habits by offering incentives and prizes when they make healthy choices with participating community partners.

"5th Gear Kids" is a partnership between the Anschutz Health and Wellness Center, Children’s Hospital Colorado, Aurora Public Schools and the Cherry Creek School District. “5th Gear” is funded by a grant from the Colorado Health Foundation.

Keeping Aurora kids healthy, in school and ready to learn

The Kids Clinic at Crawford and Laredo Elementary Schools provides comprehensive, caring and affordable health care to elementary students attending Aurora Public Schools (APS) and their younger brothers and sisters. The clinic is operated through a partnership with the Rocky Mountain Youth Clinics, APS and the Aurora Mental Health Center.

The Kids Clinic is the only school-based health center in the APS district. It provides physical, mental and dental health care to more than 2,000 APS students each year.

Each clinic is staffed by bilingual nurse practitioners, physician assistants and certified medical assistants.   Care is provided to students Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., with extended hours available (please call for more information). From birth through elementary school, the Kids Clinic offers students access to the same medical providers. This helps students receive consistent medical care throughout their elementary school education.

All Kids Clinic services are offered at low-cost fees. No student or family is turned away if they are unable to pay for services. The Kids Clinic accepts private insurance, Medicaid and Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+) and both locations can help uninsured families enroll in health plans.

Game 24 Tournament 2014At the APS Professional Learning & Conference Center, students from across APS recently showed off their math skills in the annual Game 24 Tournament. More than 50 students in grades 6-8 from 13 middle schools and K-8 schools participated in this year's tournament.

Nearly 80 students from 19 elementary schools also participated in a separate tournament.

In groups of four, students examined cards that included four numbers and calculated equations in any combination that equaled 24 using only addition, subtraction, multiplication or division. Whoever points to the card first has to explain their calculations out loud, and if they are correct, adds that card to their total score.

In the middle grades tournament, Murphy Creek's Daxi Windom, Clyde Miller's Ariana Ramirez, and Wendy Camacho and Andy Orozco Rascon of Aurora West College Preparatory Academy, took top honors after the challenge round. The four students received certificates and medals as middle school tournament winners. This was the second consecutive championship win for Daxi Windom, who also earned a graphing calculator for her top place finish.

In the elementary grades tournament, Sebastian Lee, Conrad Casebolt and Zakary Nfaoui of Quest and Yohan Young of Frontier took top honors. The overall winner Sebastian Lee also earned a math/puzzle tabletop game.
